October 2005 – While I was visiting Yosemite National Park, I was told about Columbia State Historic Park. It is a California state park, but it’s also a real operating town with restaurants, hotels, saloons, a theater, and other establishments. Since I love such historical sites and being immersed in the past, I couldn’t pass up a day trip here to stroll down the brick and board streets.
The Gold Rush Days of the 1850’s still linger here and are recreated on the 2nd Saturday of each month. Even when that’s not happening, it’s still possible to get lost in the spirit of this special old town.
Horses hooves are the only transportation sounds you’ll hear on the streets of Columbia.
Although I did enjoy this guy playing the fife, too.
Horseshoes, anyone? Get them here and watch the blacksmith make them to order.
The Wells Fargo office, the bank vault and authentic furnishings all lend to the illusion of stepping back in time.
