If like me you aren’t fortunate enough to be able to fit your RV in your garage then there will likely come the time when you need to explore RV storage options (particularly during the winter).

But, how much does it cost to store an RV? and what options are available to you?

You can expect to pay from $50 to $200 per month for traditional RV storage methods. Although, high-end options may cost up to $500 monthly. The actual cost of storage will depend on a variety of factors, such as location, the size of the RV, amenities, and the type of storage you want.

How Much Is RV Storage Near Me?

As mentioned above, it may cost you as little as $50 to store your RV or as much as $200 per month. Higher end traditional RV storage options are obviously going to cost a bit more.

There are four main factors that this cost is going to depend on, so let’s take a quick look.

SizeOne of the biggest determining factors here is going to be the size of your RV. Really short pop-up campers may be as short as eight feet long, whereas huge class A motor homes might be 45 feet in length.

Of course, the bigger your RV is, the bigger the storage space needs to be. Not only will larger storage options for larger RV’s cost more, but they’re also harder to come by. The larger your RV is, the more of an issue you’re going to have finding a suitable storage option.
LocationThe second factor that you are going to have to consider here is the location. It’s really hard for us to give you estimates of exactly how much it’s going to cost in your area. However, monthly storage rates can differ greatly from one state to another.

For instance, heavily populated areas, especially in urban settings, are going to charge you far more than if you have your RV stored in a very rural area that doesn’t have many people. Real estate is always more expensive where there are more people.
AmenitiesAnother factor that is going to make a difference here are the various amenities that the RV storage unit in question provides you with. Some places may have roofs covering the RV, some feature battery charging, some have valet parking, sewage dumping, and more.

Some places may also offer great temperature control options. The more amenities you want access to, the more money you are going to pay.
The Type of StoragePerhaps one of the biggest determining factors in terms of how much it will cost is the type of storage that you go for. There are a few different types of RV storage, including indoor storage, which may include communal garage storage or single unit storage.

There is then also outdoor RV storage, which could include open land lots, parking spaces, or even driveways. You then also have covered RV storage, which could include carports and canopies. These different types of RV storage are something that we will look at in more detail further below.

How Much Does It Cost To Store An RV Per Month?

Here are a few examples of what you might expect to pay for RV storage, based on different RV types and sizes;

  • For a small travel trailer that is between 10 feet and 40 feet in length, you’re going to need a storage space that is around 15 feet. The average monthly cost for this is going to be between $90 and $185.
  • 5th wheel trailers that are anywhere between 22 feet to 40 feet in length will require storage space of 30 feet or longer and may cost you over $185 per month.
  • A very small 8 foot to 15 foot pop-up trailer is going to need a storage space that is between 15 feet and 20 feet in length, and here you can expect to spend anywhere between $90 and $180 per month.
  • For a Class C RV that is between 20 feet and 30 feet in length, you’ll need a storage unit between 25 feet and 35 feet in length, which can cost you upwards of $150.
  • In terms of Class B campers and vans that are between 17 feet and 23 feet in length will require a storage unit between 25 feet and 40 feet long, and can cost you $180 or more.
  • If we are talking about a Class A motorhome that can be as long as 45 feet, you can easily spend $180 per month or more for storage.

Types Of RV Storage Options

There are three main types of RV storage options, indoor RV storage, outdoor RV storage, and covered RV storage.

These can all be further subdivided into various categories. Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect with each of these options.

Outdoor RV Storage

First, we have outdoor RV storage. As the name implies, here your RV is stored outside. With outdoor RV storage, expect to spend anywhere between $30 and $100 per month.

Let’s take a quick look at the different outdoor RV storage options at your disposal.

Open Land Lots

First, we have open land lots, which are more or less paved, dirt, or gravel fields. They may have fences or not, and they also have very little security. These open land lots also leave your RV exposed to the elements, and they don’t have great security, so you risk vandalism.

However, the benefit here is that they are readily available, very easy to access, and also affordable two. Here you can expect to spend anywhere between $55 and $160 per month.

Parking Spaces

We then have parking spaces, which usually come in the form of very large parking lots that have designated spots for RV’s. These are generally paved, they have fences, and usually have security cameras too.

Now, security may sometimes be limited, and your RV is exposed to the elements, but it also has designated parking spots, has potential security benefits and is affordable too. Here you can expect to spend anywhere between $75 and $250 per month.

Driveways

You then have driveways, which may be privately owned by people or by businesses. These may also provide UV protection if you’re close to a building, and it is very affordable too. However, of course, your RV is still outdoors.

Indoor RV Storage

We then have indoor RV storage. Indoor RV storage tends to be much better and provides more security for your vehicle, although it is of course more expensive too.

Let’s take a quick look at the various indoor RV storage options at your disposal.

Communal RV Storage

You have communal RV storage, which is nice because these provide you with great security and also protection from the elements.

However, there is always a possibility of damage from other people passing by, and it is a communal area so there are people around. This option may cost you anywhere from $125 to $260 per month.

Single Unit Storage

You then have single unit storage, which means that you have a single unit for your RV and only your RV. These generally provide you with great security, they only allow you to access your RV, and they also provide great protection from the elements.

However, there may be possible height limitations and this is by far the most expensive type of RV storage. Here you can expect to spend anywhere from $150 to $450 per month.

Covered RV Storage

We then have covered RV storage, which is technically outdoors, although there is also a roof covering your RV, and maybe walls too. There you can expect to spend up to $200 per month.

Carport

First, we have the carport, which does come with a roof, although no walls. The good thing about carports is that they do protect your RV from the top, they are more affordable than indoor storage options, and they usually have good height clearance.

However, your RV isn’t protected from the side, and it is more costly than outdoor storage.

Canopies

You then have canopies, which usually come complete with a roof and three walls as well. This is convenient because in terms of outdoor RV storage, it does protect your RV the best, and it has added security, but it’s still cheaper than indoor storage.

That said it is more expensive than other coverage storage options, and depending on where your RV is parked, it could still be exposed to the elements. Here you can expect to spend anywhere from $60 to $230 per month.

How To Prepare Your RV For Storage

Here are some great tips to properly prepare your RV for storage.

  • Always drain all of the water tanks and clear all of the water lines, particularly if you are worried about the lines freezing.
  • To prevent condensation from occurring within the fuel tank, you want to fill up the fuel tank. However, if you plan on parking for more than a few months, emptying the fuel tank and then refilling it before you hit the road is best.
  • Don’t leave half empty propane tanks connected to your RV. They should either be totally empty and disconnected or completely full.
  • Always clean your RV before storage and make sure that everything is totally dry.
  • Always close all of the blinds in your RV so nobody can see in, and so that your upholstery, draperies, and carpets don’t get exposed to the sunlight.
  • If you are parking outdoors, it is recommended that you place plastic or wood beneath the tires to ensure that they don’t touch the ground.
  • The other thing you should do is to prop open your refrigerator door to ensure that mold does not develop.

Where Can I Store My RV For Cheap?

If you are looking for a cheap RV storage method, going with the outdoor method is obviously best. While the outdoor storage method doesn’t provide much protection, it is affordable.

Of course, you can also go for covered storage, which is slightly more expensive, but also have better protection. That said, you can always keep your RV in your own driveway or your backyard too, which is of course free of cost.

What Is The Best Way To Store An RV?

If you are looking for the best way to store your RV, undoubtedly indoor storage is best. A single unit will provide you with the best security, the best privacy, and the best protection for your RV.

However, high end RV storage, particularly if you have a large Class A RV, may cost you close to $500 per month.
