January, 2016 – After the summer exploring Grand Teton, Yellowstone and my beloved Glacier National Park, then heading down the Oregon Coast starting with Cape Lookout State Park, I decided to head to Nevada this winter when the constant rain and gloomy skies in Oregon got too depressing for me to stay there.
Even though the temps were still downright chilly, the sunnier skies were the biggest attraction for me. Links on the right are to places I visited and actually had the time to wrote about.
January 23, 2016 – A very nice welcome to Nevada:
Walker Lake Recreation Area – Sportsman’s Beach Campground was a really great stop for a night. It was cold and no hookups, but free for the first night and this view was something I could not pass up.
And boy, am I glad I didn’t. Look at the moonrise I was treated to!
January 27-30, 2016 – Since I’m a big national park fan, I also wanted to see Death Valley and Lake Mead.
I lucked out to be there during a super bloom. The yellow flowers and I were both super happy!
February 8, 2016 – My first time in Las Vegas – I’m a Vegas Virgin no more! Although I’ve never really enjoyed casinos, I still wanted to see the neon lights and fancy hotels in Las Vegas. I had more fun there than I thought I would, even though I didn’t gamble.
March 14-20, 2016 – Lake Mead was a big draw, especially since some friends were in the area and I was able to boondock with them at Government Wash and Stewart’s Point, which was great fun.
I drove over one day to see Hoover Dam.
I loved that you could walk on this bridge and get the bird’s eye view of it seen above.
And then I went inside for the Dam Tour. Until you’re inside the guts of this place, you can’t imagine how big (and loud) it is!
A scene around Stewart’s Point – I was really enjoying being with them here, but in less than a week, I had to return to Needles because my refrigerator still hadn’t been repaired correctly. Here’s what I think of Norcold (and it’s not good).
I’d love to hear from you about your Nevada favorites in Comments below!
